We started out by building the technical infrastructure APIs that connect consumers, traditional financial institutions, and developers. Plaid cofounders Perret and Hockey used their experience working at Bain to create an API to make banking data easier for developers to use. Plaid raised $2.8 million in funding in 2013, and its infrastructure is used by many top financial apps such as PayPal, Venmo and Robinhood.
